Former Deputy President David Mabuza has died at the age of 64. It is understood that he passed away at a Gauteng hospital on Thursday.

Mabuza served as South Africa’s Deputy President from 2018 until his resignation in February 2023. Prior to that, he was Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 to 2018, and a long-standing figure in the African National Congress (ANC).

In a tribute posted on social media, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula described Mabuza as a dedicated servant of the people and a committed cadre who upheld the values of unity, discipline, and transformation, rooted in the struggle against apartheid.

The ANC expressed its condolences, saying the party had lost a freedom fighter and humble leader who served with conviction and integrity. Further details about memorial services are expected to be announced.
