The Msunduzi Municipality is facing mounting criticism for allegedly refusing to cooperate with a forensic investigation launched by KwaZulu-Natal's Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).
The probe—initiated in March under Section 106 of the Municipal Systems Act—is aimed at uncovering alleged fraud, corruption, and maladministration in three municipalities across the province. While KwaDukuza and Nongoma municipalities have reportedly complied with the investigation, CoGTA says Msunduzi has failed to do so.
CoGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has formally written to Msunduzi, warning that the municipality must cooperate or face the legal consequences of defying a statutory investigation.
“The MEC is resolute in his commitment to enforcing good governance and accountability across all KZN municipalities and will not hesitate to act without fear or favour in the interest of residents and ratepayers,” said Mzila.
However, Msunduzi officials have denied the allegation of non-cooperation. The municipality claims it has not received any formal communication from the MEC and is still awaiting a reply to a letter it sent to his office regarding the investigation.
The standoff raises fresh concerns about transparency and accountability in local governance, particularly in municipalities already plagued by financial and administrative challenges.
