South African motorists will face higher fuel prices from midnight, with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy confirming increases across petrol, diesel, and paraffin.
Petrol prices will rise by between 52 and 55 cents per litre, depending on the grade, while diesel will increase by 82 to 84 cents per litre. The price of illuminating paraffin will also go up by 89 cents per litre.
However, there’s some relief for liquefied petroleum (LP) gas users. The price of LP gas will drop by 57 cents per kilogram across most of the country—except in the Western Cape, where it will increase by R1.90 per kilogram.
Department spokesperson Robert Maake attributed the hikes mainly to rising global oil prices, driven by ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Iran during the review period.
“The stronger rand helped cushion the fuel price slightly, bringing down the increase by around 15 to 16 cents per litre. The drop in LP gas prices is due to lower costs of propane and butane,” said Maake.
He added that the slate levy remains unchanged at zero cents per litre for both petrol and diesel.
