Ratepayers in the Msunduzi Municipality have expressed outrage after the local council voted against an investigation into allegations of maladministration and financial misconduct against Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla.
Earlier this month, the Democratic Alliance (DA) tabled a motion calling for a formal probe into the mayor's conduct, citing claims first raised by former municipal manager Lulamile Mapholoba during his suspension in 2023.
However, the motion was blocked during a council sitting on Wednesday, drawing criticism from civil society groups.
Anthony Waldhausen, CEO of the Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civics, said the council’s decision signals a troubling lack of accountability and transparency.
"If the mayor has nothing to hide, he should welcome an independent investigation to clear his name," said Waldhausen. "We are now relying on the forensic investigation by the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to uncover the full extent of the corruption plaguing our municipality."
Calls are growing for provincial oversight as residents lose confidence in the council's ability to act impartially on matters of governance and public trust.
