Eastern Cape Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Zolile Williams says repairs to critical infrastructure damaged during the recent devastating floods have been completed, with efforts now focused on restoring water supply systems across the province.

The floods, which struck two weeks ago, claimed at least 100 lives and left thousands displaced. The Mthatha area was among the hardest hit, with damage to water and electricity infrastructure severely affecting basic services.

Williams confirmed that both government departments and humanitarian organisations have worked together to ensure access to clean water. “We’re doing everything possible to make sure that water reaches all affected communities,” he said.

He acknowledged challenges in the distribution of water via trucks, stating, “There were some glitches—we couldn't reach everyone at once. But we are now using repaired infrastructure to pump water from reservoirs to reach more areas.”

Authorities continue to monitor and support displaced communities as they work to fully restore services and prevent further disruptions.
