Members of Parliament have expressed concern over the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) newly introduced grant verification process, warning it may exclude vulnerable recipients—particularly in poor and rural areas.

The updated system requires in-person reviews and biometric verification, which lawmakers say poses significant barriers to access for millions who rely on social grants as a lifeline. Nearly half of South Africa’s population depends on these grants for survival.

National Treasury has cautioned that it may withhold funding if SASSA fails to meet compliance conditions, including proper income verification and database checks.

MPs criticised the process for being both costly and inaccessible. In response, SASSA has promised to develop remote verification tools and submit regular progress updates to Parliament.

Civil rights group Black Sash has also voiced concern. KZN regional manager Evashnee Naidu says poor communication from SASSA is adding to the confusion.

“While SASSA is using community and mainstream radio, and attempting SMS contact, many beneficiaries frequently change phone numbers—so the messages don’t always reach the right people,” Naidu explained.

Parliament is now urging SASSA to prioritise inclusive, affordable, and accessible solutions to avoid excluding those most in need.
