The South African government has called on all its citizens currently in Iran to register with the country’s embassy in Tehran, amid growing fears for civilian safety as conflict intensifies between Iran and Israel.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) issued the advisory following a series of deadly strikes exchanged between the two nations. Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian targets last week, prompting a retaliatory missile attack by Iran on Tel Aviv.
Since Friday, Iranian officials report that at least 224 people have been killed, while Israel has confirmed 13 fatalities in the counterstrikes.
DIRCO has warned that consular services may become limited in the coming days and is urging South Africans in Iran to assess their safety, remain vigilant, and maintain regular contact with the embassy.
The department says it is closely monitoring developments and will provide updates as the situation unfolds.
