Police have made a major breakthrough in the fight against organised crime after seizing drugs and illegal firearms worth an estimated R18 million at a storage facility in Roeland Street, central Cape Town.

According to police spokesperson FC van Wyk, officers acted on intelligence received about suspicious activity at the facility. Upon searching one of the units, they uncovered a large stash of illegal items.

“Fifteen bricks of cocaine, each weighing approximately one kilogram, were discovered—totalling around 15 kilograms with an estimated street value of R18 million,” said Van Wyk. “In addition, police recovered an AK-47 rifle, an Uzi submachine gun, five 9mm pistols, and various rounds of ammunition.”

A 40-year-old man was arrested on the scene. He is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court soon on charges including unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and dealing in drugs.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and more arrests could follow.
