A Cash-in-Transit officer is in critical condition after being shot in the face during a brazen robbery on George Sewpersad Street in the Verulam CBD on Wednesday.
According to emergency services, the officer was disarmed of both his rifle and handgun during the attack. Despite the robbers firing at the armoured vehicle, they fled empty-handed after a second officer managed to quickly shut the vehicle’s door, preventing access to the cash inside.
Paramedics from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) and Netcare 911 responded swiftly to the scene and stabilised the injured officer. Due to the severity of his injuries, a specialised medical helicopter was dispatched and landed near the Verulam Recreational Grounds in Temple Valley. The officer was airlifted to a nearby medical facility for urgent care.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, and investigations are ongoing.
