South Africa is mourning the loss of celebrated photographer, jazz promoter, and cultural activist Rashid Lombard, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 74.

Lombard died in Cape Town, leaving behind a powerful legacy in both the arts and media industries. He was the founder of an events management company that launched the iconic Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2000—an event that grew into one of the continent’s most prominent musical gatherings.

In recognition of his immense contribution to South African arts and culture, Lombard was awarded the National Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2014.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the country had lost a true cultural trailblazer.
“Rashid achieved a remarkable feat with his love for the diversity and vibrancy of our nation,” said Magwenya. “He did so with passion and humility that endeared him to all who knew him. We reflect on his life with gratitude and the joy that his legacy brings.”

The GOOD Party also paid tribute, describing Lombard as a committed former political photojournalist who championed inclusivity and cultural development.

Lombard’s passing marks the end of an era for South Africa’s creative and activist communities.
