Postbank has issued a warning to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant beneficiaries amid a surge in scams targeting users of its black cards and Sassa gold cards.

The bank revealed that fraudsters are impersonating Postbank officials and approaching beneficiaries at their homes in an attempt to steal card and PIN information.

Postbank has made it clear that its representatives will never visit beneficiaries unannounced or without a scheduled appointment.

“Both those cards are working, they are operational, there are no issues with them,” said Thami Cele, Chief Commercial Officer at Postbank. “We hear that there are people who are trying to scam people at their homes by saying they are from Postbank. We will not show up at your house if you have not been the one that invited us to your house.”

Cele further cautioned that even if the individuals appear convincing—wearing Postbank uniforms or driving branded vehicles—they should not be trusted if they arrive without prior notice.

“If a person shows up uninvited, then you know that is not a person from Postbank, regardless of the fact that some of them, we hear, are wearing Postbank uniforms and even using Postbank-branded cars,” he said.

Postbank is urging beneficiaries to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
