A Walter Sisulu University (WSU) staff member accused of shooting and killing a student during a protest at one of the institution’s residences has been granted bail of R10,000.
The 54-year-old suspect made a brief appearance in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, where the court heard final arguments from both the prosecution and defence before granting bail.
The incident, which claimed the life of 24-year-old student Sisonke Mbolekwa, occurred during a student-led protest over poor living conditions at the university's residences. Two other students sustained injuries during the unrest.
Emotions ran high in court as visibly distraught students stormed out in frustration while the magistrate outlined the bail conditions.
The case has sparked widespread outrage among the student body, with calls for justice and improved campus safety. Further court proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.
