Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo has vowed that law enforcement will not rest until all suspects involved in the death of Olorato Mongale are brought to justice. Speaking at Mongale’s funeral service in Bloemfontein on Monday morning, Boshielo revealed that investigators have uncovered a national criminal syndicate targeting women.

“We have narrowed our investigation and now know that Philangenkosi Makhanya and Bongani Mthimkhulu were working together as part of a syndicate targeting women in various malls across the country,” said Boshielo. “If you know him, advise him to surrender.”

Mongale, 30, was found dead last week after being reported missing following a date in Johannesburg. Police have since confirmed that the man she met—Philangenkosi Makhanya—was killed during a shootout with police in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday.

Boshielo confirmed Makhanya’s identity and his involvement in Mongale’s murder. His accomplice, Bongani Mthimkhulu, remains at large.

The Deputy Minister also addressed recent confusion surrounding Fezile Ngubane, who was previously named as a suspect. Police have since cleared Ngubane of any involvement, confirming he was a victim of identity theft.

Investigations have linked Makhanya and Mthimkhulu to at least 20 cases nationwide involving a similar modus operandi. “Women from across the country have positively identified the pair as the men who kidnapped and robbed them,” said Boshielo.

Cases have been reported in Bloemfontein—including Park Road and Kagisanong—as well as in Nelspruit, Midrand, Pretoria, Potchefstroom, Lebowakgomo, and Johannesburg.

“In Bloemfontein, victims said they met the men at local malls, agreed to go on dates, and were later robbed,” Boshielo explained. “This pattern is consistent with reports from other provinces.”

Police are continuing their search for Mthimkhulu and have urged the public to come forward with any information.
