Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has appealed for calm and unity in the wake of violent clashes in Addo over the weekend, which claimed four lives and left ten others injured.
According to initial reports, the violence erupted following the killing of a local resident, allegedly by foreign nationals. This incident reportedly triggered a series of retaliatory attacks, resulting in the deaths of three foreign nationals.
In a statement, Eastern Cape Provincial Government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie urged communities to refrain from further violence and to support law enforcement efforts.
“Government urges communities to fully cooperate with law enforcement officers to ensure that justice is served,” said Rantjie. “The Eastern Cape has a proud history of diversity and inclusivity, and the provincial government calls on residents to foster an environment where all individuals, regardless of origin, feel safe and valued.”
Authorities have extended their condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and have committed to a full investigation into the incidents. Security in the area has been heightened as police continue to monitor the situation.
