The KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements Department has confirmed that psychological support will be extended to the family of a woman from the Eastern Cape who tragically lost her life in a fire that swept through the Effingham informal settlement in Durban North.
Twenty-nine-year-old Ayanda Ziqethu died on Sunday night when a blaze tore through the settlement in Ward 34, leaving over 20 residents homeless.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said efforts are under way to assist the affected families and maintain communication with Ziqethu’s loved ones.
“There is ongoing interaction with the family of the deceased,” he said. “The human remains at the Effingham informal settlement were removed and are currently being kept at Phoenix Mortuary.”
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
