Police in Limpopo have launched a full-scale investigation into a deadly shooting incident believed to be linked to ongoing taxi violence, after three people were killed and another wounded at a food outlet in Musina on Saturday.

The incident occurred around midnight, according to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

“Among the deceased are two members of the Beitbridge Taxi Association, aged 36 and 35, as well as a 24-year-old male suspect,” said Ledwaba.

A fourth victim, who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the taxi association members were seated at the outlet when unidentified gunmen opened fire. One of the victims, who was struck by stray bullets, returned fire using a licensed firearm, fatally wounding one of the assailants. The other suspects fled the scene.

Police recovered a firearm and ammunition believed to belong to the deceased shooter, as well as several spent cartridges and bullet fragments.

Limpopo’s provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the incident, describing it as a “cold-blooded killing.”

“While the exact motive remains under investigation, we cannot rule out the possibility of taxi-related violence,” she said. “I have directed the provincial taxi violence investigation unit to prioritise this case and ensure those responsible are swiftly apprehended.”

The investigation continues as police pursue leads to identify and capture the remaining suspects.
