The lights have dimmed for the final time at Ster-Kinekor Gateway, and for many movie-goers in Durban, the curtain has closed on a chapter rich with popcorn memories, first dates, and cinematic magic.

After years of being a beloved staple at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Ster-Kinekor Theatres has officially concluded operations at the site. The final credits rolled on May 8, 2025—marking the end of an era for Durban's film-loving community.

The decision to shutter the cinema was not one initiated by Ster-Kinekor itself, as confirmed by the company’s chief marketing officer, Lynne Wylie, who expressed heartfelt gratitude for the journey shared with Gateway.

“While the decision to close the site was not initiated by Ster-Kinekor, we part ways with Gateway on good terms and with mutual respect,” Wylie said. “We are proud to have been part of the centre’s entertainment offering and are grateful for the positive relationship we’ve enjoyed over the years.”

For many, this cinema was more than a venue—it was a part of their childhood. Generations grew up in those darkened auditoriums, wide-eyed as they watched wizards cast spells, superheroes save the world, and animated characters teach life lessons. Families celebrated birthdays there. Teenagers shared nervous first kisses. Parents passed on the love of cinema to their children, one movie ticket at a time.

The departure leaves behind not just a vacant space in a shopping mall, but an emotional void in the hearts of those who found solace, laughter, and escape within the cinema’s walls.

But amid the sorrow, a sliver of silver screen hope remains.

Wylie assured loyal patrons that Ster-Kinekor’s story in Durban is far from over. The company is actively pursuing three new cinema locations in the city—each projected to exceed the foot traffic once drawn to Gateway.

“Ster-Kinekor remains focused on future growth and continues to invest strategically in areas that promise long-term value,” Wylie explained. “We are currently in advanced discussions around three proposed new cinema locations, all of which are expected to surpass the historical attendance levels previously recorded at Gateway.”

To their loyal audience—those who arrived early for trailers, stayed late for post-credit scenes, and made movie-going more than just an outing—Wylie had this message:

“To our loyal customers who supported the Gateway cinema – thank you. Your continued enthusiasm for the big screen experience inspires us to keep delivering the latest blockbusters and unforgettable cinematic moments at our theatres across the country.”

Meanwhile, Gateway management confirmed that a new cinema operator is preparing to step into the role. Further details are expected to be shared on social media in the coming days.

For now, Durban’s cinephiles can only hold onto their ticket stubs, their childhood memories, and a little hope that soon, somewhere new, the lights will dim once more—and the magic will begin again.
