eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba has urged soccer fans traveling to Durban for this weekend’s Nedbank Cup final to remain vigilant against scams when booking accommodation and purchasing tickets.
Speaking at a recent Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting, Xaba advised supporters to use verified platforms and confirm property details before making any reservations.
“We want to assure those attending the match that we have left no stone unturned in ensuring a safe and memorable cup final,” said Xaba. “An integrated safety and security plan involving all law enforcement agencies has been developed to protect spectators in and around the stadium.”
The highly anticipated clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is expected to draw thousands of fans to Durban. Public viewing areas will also be set up across the city to expand access to the event.
While welcoming the economic boost the tournament brings, Xaba warned against fake ticket packages and fraudulent accommodation listings that often surface around major events.
He also highlighted Durban’s busy events calendar, noting that the Nedbank Cup final would be followed closely by the Africa Travel Indaba from 13–15 May at the Durban International Convention Centre.
“This three-day African leisure trade show will attract more than 9,000 delegates, including tourism exhibitors and international and local buyers. We must seize this opportunity to showcase our vibrant culture and diverse tourism offerings,” he said.
The mayor reiterated the city’s commitment to ensuring both the sporting event and the Indaba are safe, secure, and economically beneficial for the region.
