The City of Johannesburg has confirmed that there will be no increase in the prepaid electricity surcharge, despite facing mounting financial challenges.
City officials say the surcharge will remain at R200 plus VAT, quelling speculation of a possible hike amid growing budgetary pressures.
While the municipality grapples with strained finances, it has attributed its fiscal woes to widespread non-payment by residents and businesses an issue it says is undermining its ability to deliver basic services.
“The City is committed to maintaining the surcharge at current levels,” a statement read. “However, we continue to appeal to consumers to pay for municipal services to avoid further strain on service delivery.”
The City’s ongoing financial difficulties have raised concerns about the sustainability of public utilities, with officials warning that failure to address non-payment could lead to service interruptions in the future.
