Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says Eskom is transitioning from a short-term focus on ending load shedding to a broader strategy aimed at ensuring long-term energy security and gradually phasing out load reduction.

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday during Eskom’s Winter Outlook presentation, Ramokgopa addressed public concerns around load reduction – a practice often implemented in rural areas and smaller municipalities. He clarified that the measure is not discriminatory but rather a response to technical challenges such as overloaded transformers.

“So, the excuse can’t just be that the transformer capacity is not sufficient,” said Ramokgopa. “We are working with Eskom and municipalities to invest in refurbishing transformers so they can handle demand.”

The minister said part of the plan includes rolling out smart meters, ensuring that qualifying households receive free basic electricity, while those who can afford it are expected to pay for their usage.

Ramokgopa stressed that the focus is on building a sustainable and fair electricity system that serves all communities efficiently, especially ahead of the winter demand peak.
