The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned of potential payment delays for some beneficiaries this month due to an ongoing national identity verification and eligibility review.
KwaZulu-Natal SASSA spokesperson Sandy Godlwana said the process is aimed at identifying and correcting errors within the system by updating beneficiaries’ personal and financial details.
With social grant payments set to begin on Tuesday, Godlwana urged recipients who have been contacted by the agency to visit their nearest SASSA offices as soon as possible to avoid disruptions.
“There are clients who apply without proper identification documents. In such cases, we issue a temporary ID using a ‘quad-seven’ number, which is valid for only three months,” she explained. “If they fail to return with their official ID from Home Affairs within that time, the system automatically suspends their grant.”
Godlwana added that while SASSA typically sends letters to inform affected clients, many do not receive them due to outdated or incorrect contact information.
“We simply need the correct ID number to continue payments. This verification is essential to ensure grants reach the rightful recipients and to reduce fraudulent claims,” she said.
SASSA has urged all beneficiaries to ensure their personal details are up to date and to respond promptly if contacted. The agency said it is working to minimise any disruptions and restore affected grants as swiftly as possible.
