After a lengthy delay, the Judicial Conduct Tribunal has resumed its investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge.
The inquiry, which began last year but was postponed, centres around allegations brought by legal practitioner Andiswa Mengo, who has accused Judge Mbenenge of sexual harassment.
Mengo is expected to return to the witness stand in the coming days. She alleges that the judge sent her sexually explicit images and videos, a claim he has consistently denied.
Mbenenge’s legal team maintains that digital forensics experts will confirm that no such material was ever transmitted from his cellphone.
The tribunal is scheduled to sit for the next two weeks as it hears evidence from both sides. The outcome of the proceedings could have significant implications for the judiciary, as it deals with one of the most high-profile misconduct cases involving a sitting Judge President.
