Walter Sisulu University (WSU) residence manager Manelisi Mampane is expected to apply for bail today in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court, following his arrest for the alleged murder of a student during a campus protest.

The 54-year-old made his first court appearance on Tuesday afternoon, where the matter was postponed to allow time for a formal bail application.

Mampane stands accused of fatally shooting student Sisonke Mbolekwa during a protest last week over poor living conditions in university residences. Three other students were injured during the altercation and were transported to hospital for treatment.

The incident has sparked outrage among the student body, with many now calling for Mampane to be denied bail.

University authorities have yet to comment publicly on the matter, as tensions remain high on campus in the wake of the tragedy.
