Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has praised law enforcement efforts after a dramatic drop in Easter road fatalities was recorded across the province.
This follows the release of the 2025 Easter road fatality statistics by Minister Barbara Creecy on Tuesday, which revealed a 32% nationwide decrease in road deaths compared to 2024.
Gauteng saw a particularly notable improvement, with the number of fatalities dropping from 52 last year to just 22 this year. Diale-Tlabela said the encouraging figures were the result of intensified road safety education and law enforcement visibility – measures that will continue in the months ahead.
Speaking through her spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya, the MEC emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum.
“The MEC believes that through continued collaboration among all stakeholders, we can ultimately achieve the goal of zero road crashes and fatalities in Gauteng.”
Mpya credited the efforts of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the Department of Community Safety, and various Metro Police Departments for their contributions to the province’s Easter campaign, Ithoma Ka Wena.
The MEC will be overseeing further road safety outreach efforts today in Ga-Rankuwa, northern Pretoria, as part of the province’s commitment to keeping road users informed and protected.
Officials say the focus will remain on high-risk areas, with education campaigns and traffic enforcement remaining a priority throughout the year.
