Tensions flared outside the University of Fort Hare's Dikeni campus on Tuesday morning as students staged a protest, demanding urgent attention to a list of grievances.

The protesting students are calling on the university to distribute laptops and settle outstanding non-residence allowances, which they claim total up to R450,000. Many students say they have been left financially strained and unable to complete academic work effectively without the promised support.

In addition to financial concerns, the group is also pressing for extended access to campus resources — specifically, they are demanding that the university library operate 24 hours a day to better support their academic needs.

University officials have yet to issue a formal response. Meanwhile, the demonstration has drawn significant attention on campus, with calls for dialogue between student leaders and management growing louder.
