Water Supply Disrupted in Ilembe District Following Eskom Power Failure
uMngeni-uThukela Water has confirmed that a major water supply disruption in the Ilembe District was caused by an Eskom power failure, which severely affected operations at the Lower Thukela Waterworks.
The outage, which occurred over the weekend, resulted in significant damage to the facility’s high-lift pump station. Repair teams were immediately deployed, but efforts to restore supply were hampered by delays in sourcing critical spare parts over the long weekend.
uMngeni-uThukela spokesperson Siyabonga Maphumulo said all available resources have since been mobilised to fast-track repairs. “We expect water supply to be restored soon. Our teams are working around the clock to resolve the situation,” he said.
Several areas across the Ilembe District have been impacted by the water interruption, including Zinkwazi, Sans Souci, Darnall, Lindelani, Nonoti, Blythedale, Saunders Reservoir, Glen Hills, Warrenton, Stanger Manor, High Ridge, Shakaville, Townview, Mbozamo, Honolulu Reservoir, Groutville, Ntshawini, and Melville.
Frustrated residents have voiced concern over the ongoing disruption, particularly during the busy holiday period.
“This is ridiculous it’s holidays and I’m sure everyone has families over from the different provinces,” said one resident from Stanger.
Authorities have urged residents to use water sparingly where supply is still available, while work continues to fully restore services.
