The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is calling for firmer disciplinary measures against the principal of Madisong High School in Hammanskraal, following allegations of corporal punishment involving students.
The DA has slammed the Gauteng Department of Education’s decision to merely reassign the principal to the district office, saying it falls short of appropriate accountability. The party argues that such a serious offence, which contravenes the Constitution and education policy, warrants a more decisive response.
Sergio Isa Dos Santos, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, expressed concern over the department’s handling of the matter. “We are going to submit formal questions to MEC Matome Chiloane in the provincial legislature and will be conducting an oversight visit to the school,” he said. “Lawlessness should never be tolerated, especially in schools. When something this serious happens, the response must be swift and firm.”
Dos Santos also praised the students who came forward with the allegations. “Their courage helps protect others and ensures these incidents are not swept under the rug.”
The DA continues to advocate for transparency and fairness in disciplinary proceedings within the province’s education system.
