The South African Weather Service has issued an orange level 5 weather warning for parts of the Eastern Cape, cautioning residents about potentially life-threatening conditions due to heavy and disruptive rainfall.
The affected regions include Buffalo City Metro, the Amathole District, and OR Tambo District. Authorities warn that the anticipated downpours may lead to localised flooding, posing a significant risk to life and property.
Weather forecaster Ayabonga Tshungwana urged communities to remain vigilant throughout the adverse weather period.
“We’re expecting cloudy conditions with a strong likelihood of showers, rain, and thunderstorms, particularly in the northern areas of the province and along the east coast. We’ve issued the necessary warnings, and the level 5 alert indicates the possibility of localised flooding,” said Tshungwana.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates, avoid low-lying areas, and take necessary precautions to stay safe. Emergency services remain on standby.
