A major multi-agency roadblock was conducted at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza on Thursday, as authorities ramped up operations ahead of the busy Easter weekend. The operation, which began early in the sweltering Durban heat, saw dozens of vehicles pulled over and searched as traffic volumes surged.

The joint initiative involved the South African Police Service (SAPS), eThekwini Metro Police, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), and other law enforcement officials. Officers checked vehicle roadworthiness, opened boots and bonnets, tested hooters, and conducted passenger searches in public transport vehicles.

A key feature of the operation was the launch of a new high-tech device, unveiled by Transport MEC Siboniso Duma, designed to scan licences and check for outstanding traffic fines. The device, named Umumemezi WeZimoto, is expected to boost efforts to reduce road fatalities by harnessing smart technology.

“It is one of those critical days in the province — people from all directions are heading toward KwaZulu-Natal,” Duma said. “This device marks an important step in our mission to use technology to save lives. The next three days will be very busy. As we travel to church and gatherings, let us enjoy responsibly and be cautious.”

The operation began winding down by midday, with the remaining officers maintaining a visible presence as traffic volumes were expected to increase significantly in the afternoon.

Authorities have urged motorists to plan ahead, drive responsibly, and cooperate with officials to ensure a safe Easter for all road users.
