A Home Affairs official accused of fraudulently registering death certificates for financial gain is expected to return to court in May.

Nozipho Mungwe, 44, made a brief appearance in the Himeville Magistrate’s Court in Underberg on Tuesday. She was arrested in February following allegations that she had illegally processed death certificates between February and December 2021.

According to investigators, Mungwe allegedly used the falsified documents to submit fraudulent death benefit claims to Sanlam Insurance. The matter was brought to the attention of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit, which later confirmed that all the individuals listed as deceased were, in fact, alive.

It is believed that Mungwe personally registered the fake deaths, enabling her to manipulate the system for financial gain.

She has since been released on bail of R10,000. The case has been postponed to mid-May as investigations continue.
