A student has been killed and three others injured following a shooting during a protest at Walter Sisulu University’s main campus in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, allegedly involving a university employee.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a group of students were reportedly protesting near a residence and allegedly set a vehicle alight. In response, a university employee is believed to have opened fire. The university has suspended all academic and administrative operations for the day in the wake of the violence.

While police have yet to release an official statement, the shooting has sparked widespread condemnation.

Education activist Hendrick Makaneta expressed shock and sadness at the tragic event, calling it a reflection of the government’s failure to ensure a safe learning environment for students. “The safety and security of students must be prioritised,” he said, urging the university to take immediate action by strengthening campus security and reviewing existing protocols to prevent further tragedies.
