The eThekwini Municipality is bracing for an influx of nearly 1.3 million holidaymakers expected to descend on the city over the Easter long weekend, with local officials confident in their readiness to handle the busy period.

Mayor Cyril Xaba says the city has ramped up safety measures at key tourist sites to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors. He made the announcement at the launch of the city’s “Endless Fun Season” campaign on Monday.

According to the mayor, the anticipated surge in tourism is expected to generate an estimated R2.5 billion in direct spending, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

“We are expecting a rise in the number of holidaymakers heading to Durban. Based on our successful festive season, this promises to be another bumper period for the city—and we’re excited,” said Xaba.

In preparation for the busy season, the municipality has also created around 11,000 temporary job opportunities to support tourism-related services and ensure adequate staffing during the peak.

The city’s campaign aims to showcase Durban as a top holiday destination, combining vibrant entertainment, safe public spaces, and economic opportunity in one of South Africa’s most beloved coastal cities.
