Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Maropene Ramokgopa, has expressed confidence in former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas, following his appointment as South Africa’s special envoy to the United States.
The announcement, made by the Presidency on Monday, marks a key step in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between South Africa and the US.
Speaking on the sidelines of the second G20 Development Working Group 2025 meeting in Somerset West, Ramokgopa praised Jonas’ track record in both the public and private sectors.
“We are confident in the President’s choice,” Ramokgopa told SABC News. “Mr Jonas brings with him a wealth of experience—not only from his time as Deputy Finance Minister, but also from his work in the Eastern Cape and the business world. He offers a balanced perspective that will serve South Africa well on the global stage.”
Ramokgopa added that Jonas is well-positioned to showcase South Africa’s strengths and opportunities to the United States. “I have no doubt that he will deliver what is needed to advance cooperation between our two nations.”
Jonas’ appointment comes at a time when South Africa is seeking to deepen international partnerships and drive inclusive development through diplomatic engagement.
