Residents across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to prepare for significant rainfall and the potential for widespread flooding, as adverse weather conditions loom over the province from Tuesday.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain, covering nearly the entire province—excluding the north-eastern regions. The warning will remain in effect for at least the next two days.
According to Senzo Mzila, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance, all municipal disaster management teams in the affected areas have been placed on high alert.
“The weather forecast indicates persistent rainfall over most parts of the province,” said Mzila. “This could result in hazardous driving conditions—especially on dirt roads—as well as the flooding of roads and informal settlements, damage to infrastructure and homes, particularly mud structures.”
Motorists have been cautioned to expect significant traffic disruptions due to potential road closures and inundated routes.
The following areas are expected to be impacted:
Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma (including Indaka and Ladysmith), Dannhauser, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality (Underberg), eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, eThekwini, Greater Kokstad, Impendle, Ingwe, Inkosi Langalibalele (Escourt and Sobabili), KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Mpofana (Giants Castle and Mooi River), Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Ndwedwe, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Ray Nkonyeni, and Richmond.
Residents in these areas are advised to exercise caution, stay updated on weather alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel where possible. Emergency services remain on standby to respond to any incidents.
