A manhunt is under way for a group of suspects involved in the fatal shooting of an off-duty VIP bodyguard in Inanda, north of Durban.
The 36-year-old police officer, who was attached to the Presidential Protection Services, was ambushed by five gunmen on Mafukuzela Drive in Newtown C on Tuesday night. He had just completed his shift and was still in uniform when the attack occurred near a local tuckshop.
According to provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, the officer returned fire and managed to wound one of the suspects before he was fatally shot at the scene.
“The injured suspect was later tracked down and arrested at a nearby clinic,” said Netshiunda. “The remaining suspects fled the scene after robbing the officer of his service firearm.”
Police are continuing the search for the remaining suspects, urging anyone with information to come forward.
