Heavy rains and flooding have led to the closure of several roads in the North West province, particularly around Mahikeng, with traffic diversions in place as authorities work to manage the disruptions.
The N18 and several other key routes have been affected, causing delays and forcing motorists to seek alternative paths. The province’s Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has deployed traffic officials to assist road users and monitor affected areas.
Paul Stone, Director of Traffic Management, has called on motorists to exercise extreme caution and avoid driving at night due to ongoing rainfall and the risk of worsening conditions.
“We plead with motorists not to drive during the night. The weather forecast indicates continued rainfall, and the Vaal Dam's open sluice gates could cause further road problems, particularly in areas surrounding the Bloemhof Dam, which is currently over capacity. Safety must be a priority,” said Stone.
Meanwhile, communities along the Vaal River in Orkney near Klerksdorp are grappling with the impact of rising water levels. The recent opening of a fifth sluice gate at the Vaal Dam has prompted some residents to evacuate their homes as a precaution. Others remain on alert, prepared to leave should the situation worsen.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and to follow safety advisories as weather conditions continue to evolve.
