Representatives from the G20 are currently gathering in Durban to deliberate on a proposed initiative aimed at reducing global youth unemployment by 5% by the year 2030. The plan, which has received widespread support, especially for its focus on employment strategies and entrepreneurship, was initially introduced during the first G20 Employment Working Group meeting in February.

This week, members of the G20 Employment Working Group are convening in uMhlanga to further discuss the details of the proposal. South Africa’s Department of Employment and Labour’s Siyabonga Hadebe called for a consensus on the target set for Nelson Mandela Bay, a key component of the broader initiative.

"We aim to achieve maximum consensus on the Nelson Mandela Bay Target and its implementation modality," Hadebe stated on Tuesday. "This is crucial for the success of the initiative."

Youth unemployment in South Africa currently stands at a staggering 44.6%, underscoring the urgency of the matter.

The proposal, which aligns with the Antalya Goal established in Turkey in 2015, has garnered support from several G20 members. A representative from Germany noted that they are still reviewing the proposal but expressed support for a regional and national approach that focuses on vulnerable groups, particularly young women, school dropouts, and migrant communities.

"We are studying the proposal and will present minor changes in the coming weeks. We support a regional approach that allows for a deeper analysis of vulnerable groups," the German representative said.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the United Kingdom's delegation expressed their backing for the initiative, particularly highlighting its emphasis on employment strategies, skills development, and entrepreneurship. "These pillars align closely with the UK's perspectives," the representative noted.

As the G20 continues its discussions, the hope is that this plan will foster global cooperation and innovative solutions to address youth unemployment, offering a brighter future for young people worldwide.
