The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has issued a traffic advisory for today, April 8, 2025, informing travelers of scheduled blasting on the N2 between Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff at approximately 12:00 PM.

The blast will take place at KM 1.9, about 1.9 kilometers from Mount Frere in the direction of Mount Ayliff. The road will be closed during the blast, with the closure expected to last for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Motorists traveling from Kokstad to Mthatha are advised to consider two alternative routes: the Matatiele to Mount Fletcher route or the Flagstaff and Lusikisiki route to Port St Johns, then rejoin the N2 in Mthatha via the R61. Similarly, motorists traveling from Mthatha to Kokstad may use the same alternatives. The shortest detour will add approximately 69 kilometers and 50 minutes to travel time.

SANRAL's Southern Region Manager, Mbulelo Peterson, urged motorists to plan their trips accordingly, use caution on the road, and be prepared for the brief disruption. The agency apologizes for any inconvenience caused.
