The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group has welcomed Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s decision to expand the list of VAT zero-rated food items, a move aimed at making essential goods more affordable for low-income households.
The newly added VAT-exempt items include chicken feet, organ meats from sheep, poultry, and other animals, as well as canned vegetables and dairy liquid blends.
Mervin Abrahams, Programme Coordinator for the advocacy group, emphasized the importance of ensuring retailers comply with the VAT exemption.
“What drives consumer choices is really the cost. If this measure is to benefit vulnerable households, we must ensure that producers and retailers pass on the VAT savings to consumers,” he said.
The group continues to advocate for policies that reduce food insecurity and improve affordability for struggling households.
