A convicted murderer who escaped from a maximum-security prison in Maputo last year has been arrested in Sandton, Johannesburg.
Nelson Simiao Massango was among more than 1,500 prisoners who broke out amid post-election unrest in Mozambique. He had been serving a 20-year sentence for murder, handed down in 2015.
Authorities apprehended Massango at a car hire dealership in Sandton, where he is now under investigation for multiple cases of car theft in Gauteng.
According to reports, he allegedly rented 4x4 bakkies and smuggled them into Mozambique, where they were later sold.
South African authorities are working closely with their Mozambican counterparts as they investigate further charges against him.
