A devastating bus crash on the R21 northbound, near OR Tambo International Airport, has claimed twelve lives, with several others injured.

The accident occurred just after the R24 interchange, leaving 45 passengers, including the driver, hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

According to Ekurhuleni Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson William Ntladi, the bus jackknifed and rolled multiple times, causing passengers to be ejected onto the road.

"Upon arrival, emergency services found people lying across the roadway. A medical check confirmed that twelve adult passengers—nine men and three women—had died at the scene," Ntladi explained.

The entire freeway remains closed, causing major traffic disruptions. Authorities urge motorists to seek alternative routes as investigations continue into the cause of the crash.
