A violent standoff between two rival taxi associations, the Nancefield Dube West Association (NANDUWE) and the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA), has intensified tensions in Soweto.

The dispute stems from a battle over operating routes, with NANDUWE blocking roads on Monday morning in an attempt to prevent WATA from using certain routes. The protest comes in defiance of a court ruling that granted WATA permission to operate on the contested routes.

The confrontation turned deadly when a taxi boss and a 49-year-old woman were killed after being struck by a metro police vehicle responding to the unrest.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as efforts to de-escalate the conflict continue.
