Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested in Manila under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant on charges of crimes against humanity.
The charges stem from his controversial war on drugs, during which he is accused of orchestrating the deaths of approximately 4,000 individuals—mostly poor men—often without due process or concrete evidence.
Duterte, who has long defended his anti-drug campaign as a necessary measure to protect the country, maintains his innocence.
“I have done nothing wrong. Everything I did was in the best interest of my nation,” he stated.
His arrest marks a significant moment in international efforts to hold leaders accountable for human rights violations, with global reactions expected to follow in the coming days.
