KwaZulu-Natal’s police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has issued a stern warning to emerging business owners against engaging in bribery for political favours, emphasizing their role in perpetuating corruption and crime.

Speaking at the Umyezane Summit, Conference, and Awards at the Durban ICC on Monday, Mkhwanazi addressed key issues affecting small businesses, particularly the increasing trend of bribery in supply chain management.

“Be it the mayor, councillor, or any decision-maker, they are often bribed by business owners seeking lucrative deals. You are contributing to crime and enabling corruption by encouraging officials to grant you favours,” he stated.

Mkhwanazi highlighted the alarming rise in unethical business practices, especially among entrepreneurs in procurement and supply chain sectors.

“We see rampant bribery and corruption within SEM officials and supply chain personnel responsible for allocating contracts,” he said.

Beyond corruption, Mkhwanazi also urged young entrepreneurs venturing into the liquor industry to consider the broader social consequences of their trade.

“You might think it’s not your concern, but alcohol abuse often leads to serious crimes. A woman may be raped on her way home from a drinking establishment, or domestic violence could arise due to intoxication. We must all acknowledge the role these factors play in crime and work to address them.”

The two-day Umyezane Summit aims to empower small businesses and tackle challenges hindering their growth while reinforcing ethical business practices.
