Staff at a KFC fast-food outlet in Verulam, north of Durban, were injured during an armed robbery on Friday morning.
The four suspects, armed with firearms, targeted the restaurant on Ireland Street as employees were opening the store. According to Prem Balram of Reaction Unit, the robbers demanded access to the safe and proceeded to assault both workers and a private security officer present at the time.
When Reaction officers and paramedics arrived on the scene, they were informed that the suspects had fled with a stolen cell phone after learning that the keys to the safes were not on the premises.
Authorities are investigating the robbery, and the search for the suspects continues.
