President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concern over the state of Gauteng and its municipalities, calling on provincial leaders to take urgent action to improve conditions ahead of the G20 Summit later this year.
Addressing Gauteng’s leadership at the Johannesburg Council Chambers in Braamfontein on Thursday, Ramaphosa stressed the need for the province—particularly the City of Johannesburg—to be properly prepared to host the world’s most industrialized nations.
His visit formed part of the District Development Model, aimed at fostering integrated planning across different levels of government. Several Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, and government officials accompanied him.
Ramaphosa emphasized that Gauteng must present itself in the best possible light for the international gathering.
“The eyes of the world will be on Gauteng and Johannesburg. We must ensure the province is at its best—visually, environmentally, and structurally—where these meetings will take place,” he said.
He noted that when global summits are held elsewhere, host cities ensure they are in “tip-top” condition, and South Africa must do the same to make a lasting impression on international delegates.
