Several people were injured in a fire believed to have been caused by an explosion at a home on Alan Paton Road in Berea on Thursday morning. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene following reports of the incident.
Upon arrival, ALS Paramedics found five individuals with burn injuries ranging from moderate to critical. "Paramedics worked to stabilise the victims on site before transporting three of them to nearby hospitals for urgent care," said Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics.
Initial reports suggest that the men were conducting fumigation at the residence when the fire broke out. Both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the eThekwini Fire Department responded to the scene and will continue to investigate the cause of the explosion.
