Temporary shelters have been constructed for flood victims in Port Shepstone who lost their homes following devastating storms. Officials from the Department of Human Settlements assessed the damage in the storm-affected municipalities of Ray Nkonyeni and uMdoni on Wednesday.
Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, accompanied by provincial MEC Siboniso Duma, conducted a two-day disaster oversight visit as recovery efforts continue across parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
The torrential rains have claimed at least 15 lives and displaced hundreds in recent weeks, leaving many in urgent need of shelter and assistance.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed that four families have already received assistance, and plans are in place to expedite temporary housing in uMdoni.
“We can confirm that the verification process has been completed, and there are plans to ensure that the temporary residential units are finished within a few days,” said Sibiya.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage, with further relief efforts expected in the coming days.
