Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has urged South Africa to focus on expanding electricity access before shifting towards cleaner energy solutions. Speaking at the Energy Indaba in Cape Town, he highlighted the severe electricity shortages across Africa, noting that 43% of the continent's population remains without access.
“In global terms, 600 million of the 680 million people worldwide who lack electricity are in Africa—that’s 83% of the global total,” Ramokgopa stated.
He also outlined the energy technical working group's structure under the G20, emphasizing three key priorities: energy security, a just and inclusive energy transition, and African interconnectivity.
“We believe the goal of a single electricity market across Africa is within reach. Achieving universal electricity access by 2063, as envisioned, will require regional integration,” he added.
Ramokgopa’s remarks highlight the government's focus on balancing energy security with long-term sustainability while addressing Africa’s pressing electricity needs.
