The trial of three individuals accused of kidnapping and human trafficking in connection with the disappearance of six-year-old Joshlin Smith began in Saldanha Bay on Monday.
Joshlin’s mother, Raquel ‘Kelly’ Smith, her boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Joshlin went missing from Middelpos on February 19, 2024, and has not been found since. The state alleges that the accused were involved in trafficking her for the purpose of exploitation. Prosecutors are seeking the maximum penalty—life imprisonment.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with authorities under pressure to deliver justice. The trial is expected to uncover more details about the events leading to Joshlin’s disappearance.
